Serbia Women’s Volleyball Team Preview
We gave a breakdown of Serbia’s women’s volleyball team earlier and talked about why this team are the favorites to win in our game preview for the France vs Serbia in the women’s CEV competition in 2021.
Here are some highlights in regards to the achievements of this team that we discussed in that preview:
- Bronze medal winners in the 2020 Olympics
- Silver medal in the 2016 Olympics
- Defending champions of the Women’s Volleyball European Championship since 2017
- Defending World champions in the Women’s Volleyball World Championship.
- 5th best team in the world, 2nd best in Europe.
Serbia is currently on top of Pool A and have won all of their three games and every set they played.
They demolished every team they played so far with a 3-0 scoreline. Serbia is also the team with the 2nd best points scored to points conceded ratio in the tournament so far.
Tijana Bošković who won the best spiker award in the Tokyo Olympics this year yet again emerged as the top scorer in every game Serbia has played so far. She scored an impressive 27 points in 3 sets against a strong Belgian side.
That’s an impressive 9 points per set, a higher average than the average of Isabelle HAAK who is the leading scorer so far in the tournament.
Their captain Maja Maja Ognjenovic is the best setter so far and has the highest efficiency at 74.36%. She won the best setter award in the last European Championships in 2019.
Before Serbia faces Russia, they will face off Azerbaijan today. Serbia are so far unbeaten in the European Championships. Their last defeat in the European Championships came at the hands of none other than Russia way back in 2015.
So far, Serbia tops in group A in terms of average points scored and fewest points conceded per set. Serbia has scored the highest number of points per set at 25 points per set and conceded just 16.6 points per set.
Netherlands is the only team in the tournament so far that has conceded fewer points than Serbia. Netherlands has conceded just 159 points in 10 sets for an average of 15.9 points conceded per set.
Russia Women’s Volleyball Team Preview
Russia is currently ranked 1 place below Serbia as the 6th best team in the world and the 3rd best women’s volleyball team in Europe.
Russia has historically been the most successful team in Europe and with 13 titles, has won the most number of European championships. Russia won the first 3 women’s volleyball european championships between 1949 and 1955.
Russia then went on to win 7 consecutive championships between 1958 and 1979 as the USSR, and chased it up with a few more championships in the 80s.In fact Russia (then as USSR) reached the final in every European championship between 1949 to 1991 and won the championship again as Russia in 1993.
However, results have been mixed for Russia since the 2000s. After winning the European Championship in 2001 Russia failed to reach the semi finals in 2003 for the first time in its history.
In 2005 and 2007 Russia managed a third place finish, failed to reach the semi finals again in 2009 and 2011 and then won two consecutive titles in 2013 and 2015 only to get knocked out in the quarter finals in 2017 and 2019.
At the world stage, after winning 2 consecutive gold medals in the world championships in 2006 and 2010 Russia has struggled to go past the quarter finals in the tournament.
Russia has also struggled in the olympics since winning a silver in 2004 Olympics with Serbia outshining them as the best European team in the tournament. Russia finished 7th in the 2020 Olympics which has been their worst finish so far at the Olympics.
Russia is currently runners up to Serbia in Pool A. Russia put in a good performance against France winning their opening game 3-1. They followed it up with a 3-0 demolition of Azerbaijan. But they had a disappointing game against Belgium. Russia won the first 2 sets and looked set to win the game 3-0 but then proceeded to lose 3 consecutive sets as the Belgians won 3-2.
Of all the teams in the tournament that are in the top 2 of their pools, Russia has the lowest Points for to points against ratio.
Russia conceded the most number of points in Pool A but that can be attributed to the fact that Russia played the most number of sets as well. Russia is 3rd in terms of points scored per set with an average of 22.17 points per set and they have conceded the second fewest points per set at 20.25 points per set.
Serbia vs Russia Women’s Volleyball Predictions Match Odds
Bookmakers are offering the following odds for the Serbia vs Russia game in the 2021 Volleyball European Championship:
- Serbia 1.06
- Russia 7.50
Based on these odds we can clearly see that Serbia are clear favorites to win the game and bookmakers are giving Russia a very low chance of winning.
If we convert these odds into percentages, Russia has only a 13.3% chance of winning.
Serbia vs Russia Game Predictions in the Women’s Volleyball European Championship 2021
Based on the odds we can easily tell that Serbia seems to be the clear winner. But are the bookmakers wrong? The last time Serbia faced Russia was in the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League on June 14,2021. Russia trashed Serbia 3-0 in that game.
Before the Women’s CEV championship began, Russia was actually ranked above Serbia on August 8 ,2021. As you can see from the image below:
Although Serbia is now ranked higher than Russia according to the latest rankings, there is only a 10 point difference between the two teams. To put things into perspective, the gap between the 4th spot occupied by Turkey and the 5th spot occupied by Serbia is a more than double than difference at 22 points.
Now before you think the bookmakers are wrong, consider this fact for a second, could it be possible that even though Serbia’s defeat to Russia could be attributed to the fact that they were preparing for the Olympics, a tournament which was scheduled to begin less than 3 weeks from the time these two teams played?
Could it also be possible that the bookmakers are right because Serbia won a bronze whereas Russia had its worst result in the Olympics?
If you also take into account the talent in Serbia’s squad and the fact that those talented players are topping the charts is it any surprise that bookmakers favor Serbia compared to a Russian team that vastly underperformed against Belgium and in the Olympics where it was beaten by weaker teams?
Based on this fact it seems that Russia still has a problem with inconsistency while Serbia is a consistent team. This is exactly why we predict that Serbia will win.
But the question remains, by what score will Serbia win? When we analyze the past results of both the teams we can get a clearer picture of what to expect from Russia.
Russia has a tendency to start strong even against the strongest teams. We will start this analysis by looking at Russia’s game against China in the Olympics. China is one of the best teams in the world and is the defending Women’s Volleyball World Champion (not to be confused with the Volleyball World Championships. The World Cup in volleyball is a different competition to the World Championships in volleyball).
There are 78 points separating these two teams. Russia won the first set, lost the 2nd and 3rd and then went on to win the last two sets to win the game 3-2 pulling off a major upset in the Olympics.
Russia then faced World number 4, Turkey. Russia again won the first set although they went on to lose the 2nd and 3rd. But then they won the 4th set and lost in the final set.
In the quarterfinals Russia faced Brazil, a team that is ranked as the 2nd best team in women’s volleyball. Even though Russia lost the game 3-1, Russia won the first set yet again.
We saw this same pattern in Russia’s loss to Belgium. This time Russia won not only the first set but the second set as well.
So what does this mean when it comes to our predictions for the Serbia vs Russia game? It means that there is a very good chance that Russia wins the first set. But since we predict Serbia will win there is a very good chance that the game will have at least 4 sets.
There are in fact two possible ways the game will pan out based on this historical pattern:
- Russia wins the first set and Serbia goes on to win 3 consecutive sets to win the match 3-1.
- Russia wins the first two sets.Serbia wins the next three sets and wins the game 3-2.
We believe that there is a good chance Serbia will 3-2 instead of 3-1 because Russia has had more time to rest.
Now, let’s move on to the betting tips for the Serbia vs Russia women’s volleyball game.
