Portugal vs Germany Euro 2021 Predictions & Betting Tips

Portugal will face off against Germany in the Allianz Arena in Munich on June 19 2021 at 6PM Central European Summer Time.

In our match preview for the Portugal vs Germany game in Euro 2021 we will be giving you some predictions, odds and betting for this intense match up.

So, without further ado, let’s get started…

Portugal Form, Predicted line up and Tactics

Coming into Euro 2020, Portugal were undefeated in 2021, they played 5,won 3 and drew 2 games.

Portugal are also the defending champions after winning the 2016 European Championship. Portugal also won the Nations League in 2019 and are currently ranked 5th by FIFA.

Portugal were excellent in their opening game in Euro 2021 against Hungary and won by an impressive 3-0 margin.

Portugal usually deploys in a 4-3-3 formation. The tactics head Fernando Santos employs depends on the opposition he faces. If Portugal are playing a strong team that tends to press, then 2 of the 3 midfielders will be defensive midfielders while the other midfielder is a free roaming attacking midfielder and the formation ends up looking more like a 4-2-3-1.

If Portugal are facing a team that prefers to sit back and defend compactly then the midfield would be set up to break down that defence. Portugal would now line up with 1 defensive midfielder, 1 box to box midfielder and 1 attacking midfielder.

Check out our predictions for the Euro 2020 Final!

One of the full backs, usually Raphael Guerrero on the left, tends to push high while the right fullback tends to be a bit more defensive and form a back three with the centerbacks. If they are facing a defensive team the defensive fullback also pushes high.

The preferred center back pairing tends to be 24 year old Ruben Dias and the more experienced Pepe, Raphael Guerrero is the preferred attacking fullback while Cancelo is the more conservative fullback.

Cancelo had to be pulled out of the squad because he contracted Covid and was replaced with Diogo Dalot. Semedo is the first choice right back now in place of Cancelo

Danilo Periera is the preferred defensive midfielder and he is often paired with one of Ruben Neves or William Carvalho who can create wonderful long passes.

We expect Danilo and Carvalho to sit deep and form a double pivot in this game between Portugal and Germany. If Portugal concede, Carvalho might be pushed higher and possibly replaced by Renato Sanches who can join attacks quickly from midfield.

Bruno Fernandes will be starting ahead of them as the attacking midfielder and the front three consists of Ronaldo as the center forward, Jota on the left and Bernardo Silva on the right.

Ferandes,Ronaldo,Jota and Bernando Silva often interchange positions and are very fluid and you can expect them to do this with Germany.

Germany Form, Predicted line up and Tactics

After a 15 year stint as the head coach of Germany, Joachim Low will resign after Euro 2021. He helped Germany reach the final of Euro 2008, a third place finish in the 2010 World Cup, the semi-finals in Euro 2012 and then helped them win the 2014 World Cup followed by a 4th place finish in Euro 2016.

Since then however, Germany has witnessed a sharp decline in form. They crashed out of the 2018 World Cup in the group stage. This was the first time Germany failed to move beyond the group stage in the world cup.

The golden generation has aged with many players like Lahm,Klose,Schweinsteiger,Khedira,Boateng and Goetze retiring from the team  and new players unable to settle and replace them.

Low has changed his players and tactics constantly and has decided to resign because of his failure to help Germany reach its former glory.

Germany’s form in 2021 has been mixed. Prior to Euro 2020 they played 5 games, winning 3, drawing 2 and losing 2-1 to North Macedonia.

Even though Germany lost 1-0 to France, the Germans played well, creating many chances, especially in the second half.

The re-introduction of Mats Hummels in Euro 2021 has brought about a bit of stability in defence, a position which Germany struggled in as many players would be tried in these positions.

The preferred center backs now seem to Rudiger and Hummels if 2 center backs are being played while Ginter is added if Germany sticks to a formation requiring 3 center backs.

From a 4-2-3-1 formation Die Manschafft has shifted to a 3-4-3 formation in recent games.

Rudiger,Hummels and Ginter seem to be the first choice central defenders, Kimmich has retained his place as the preferred right wingback and his attacking prowess from the wings has been particularly impressive but Can could start in Ginter’s place.

We don’t expect Hummels to be dropped in spite of his own goal because he still made key interceptions to prevent a much younger and faster Mbappe from scoring and creating opportunities as the game progressed.

We expect Germany to press high and Can’s ability to carry the ball from defence could mean he gets picked over Ginter.

Toni Kroos seems to be the mainstay in midfield while he can be partnered with Gundogan who had an excellent season with Manchester City or Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka missed the game against France due to injury and he is unlikely to start against Portugal.

Gosens was excellent against France and he will be expected to start as the left wingback.

Toni Kroos and Gundogan will start in midfield due to uncertainty surrounding Goretzka’s injury. The lack of other solid and experienced options in these positions might prove to be a problem for Germany in this game. This problem could also cost them dearly as the tournament progresses but Can could potentially fit into this position.

Germany lacks a proper striker. Gnabry has often started in this position, Timo Werner often slots into this position but they lack clinical finishing. This was obvious in their game against France where many amazing opportunities were created without being converted.

The front 3 will be fluid and we expect Muller, Havertz and Gnabry. We at slotfreespin believe that there is a possibility that Timo Werner might start in Gnabry’s place.

Portugal vs Germany Euro 2021 Predictions

This will be a very hard game to predict. History has been on Germany’s side though. In the past 5 games that Portugal and Germany faced off against each other Germany won in the past 4 meetings while Portugal’s won once, in Euro 2000.

Neither team will sit back so there will be a lot of action.

The midfield is where the action will take place in our opinion. The Germans will try to press high up the pitch while Portugal will try to stretch the game and attack from wide.

Based on Germany’s poor form in the run up to Euro 2021 we predict that Portugal will win 2-1 but as we mentioned before, this game is very hard to predict.

Place one bet on Portugal to win and one bet(of equal amount) on Germany to win. In this case you only lose your money if there is a draw but that is unlikely to happen in such a crucial game.
